At Ndara, we believe that each stitch, each handcrafted piece, is more than a product - it's a thread woven with stories of hope, resilience, and dreams. The impact of Ndara goes far beyond craftsmanship. Each Ndara artisan experiences a transformative journey that reaches into the heart of their families, their communities, and beyond. Ndara is not simply a workplace or a source of income; it is a catalyst for life-changing growth. Through their work, they inspire others around them and uplift entire neighborhoods, spreading hope and opportunity across generations.
As you read each of these portraits, you’ll see how the threads of each artisan’s story intertwine with Ndara’s mission: to create a legacy of empowerment and pride for artisans and communities alike.
During each market, we share portraits of our artisans along with their personal stories, revealing how their lives have changed since joining Ndara. Since language barriers prevent many artisans from connecting directly with clients, we’re displaying these stories in our Bangui boutique during our Christmas markets, giving customers a glimpse into the lives and dreams behind each handcrafted piece.
Please take the time to get to know our artisans and see the impact you can have. Your support changes lives and spreads hope.
Introducing Nadia
Nadia is a woman of vibrant strength, her spirit reflected in the bright headwraps she wears and the warmth that lights her eyes. When Nadia joined Ndara, she hoped to secure a future for her children, but she gained much more - a way to uplift her entire family and community, stitch by stitch.
Nadia’s journey to Ndara began amidst the turbulence of Bangui. A friend, recognizing her skill and perseverance, urged her to visit Ndara’s founder. When she arrived, she found a small group of women sitting in a garden shed, their early attempts at rug-making tangled and uneven. With her keen eye, Nadia quickly saw the issue and advised them to start again and craft with precision. Though they initially resisted, within days, the artisans returned to Nadia, acknowledging her insight and asking her to teach them. From that moment, Nadia became a cornerstone of the Ndara team - a role she has embraced with both humility and pride.
The steady income Nadia earns at Ndara has transformed her life. She has gained respect in her community, where her voice is now valued. For her family, this shift has been profound; as the primary breadwinner, she no longer relies on anyone to support her children. Her husband, too, respects her independence, knowing she has the strength and resources to care for her family alone. Nadia reflects on the power of this stability, realizing she never imagined how much it would change her and her family.
As a mother, Nadia has dedicated herself to building a brighter future for her four children - Charlotte, Exaucé, and most recently, the twins Obed and Shadaï. Her oldest daughter, Charlotte, proudly tells everyone that one day, she will work at Ndara, following in her mother’s footsteps. Nadia’s heart swells knowing she is not only providing for her children but also inspiring them. Her children have grown up visiting the Ndara boutique, enchanted by the vibrant display of handmade products and, like their mother, fascinated by the creative work behind each piece.
In 2022, Nadia saved enough to buy a piece of land and build a small house to rent out, providing her with a steady stream of passive income. She dreams of owning a second piece of land closer to Ndara, where she could live with her family. With the money she has saved, Nadia has also purchased two sewing machines, which she uses to teach her younger sister the skills she’s learned, empowering her to earn her own income.
Among Ndara’s products, Nadia’s favorite to create is the colorful stuffed animals, each a symbol of the Central African Republic’s beauty and biodiversity. These happy creatures have allowed her to teach her children about animals they might otherwise never encounter, like the pangolin and giraffe. Her goal for 2025 is to master the zig-zag and embroidery machines at the Ndara workshop, adding to her skills so she can tackle even more complex products. In her heart, Nadia knows that growth is essential, and learning new techniques is her pathway forward.
Opening the Ndara boutique was a milestone that challenged everyone on the team to learn and grow. Nadia faced the daunting tasks of managing inventory, creating product displays, and interacting with clients - a far cry from her early days in the workshop. Language remains a challenge, and she prays daily for the patience to improve her French and bridge cultural gaps. When she feels uncertain, she recalls how far she’s come: before Ndara, she had never written an invoice or managed product displays. Now, she navigates these tasks with confidence, trusting that she can learn anything she sets her mind to.
This Christmas, Nadia is grateful for the chance to celebrate with her family. She plans to take her children to church and prepare a special meal for them of chicken and rice, while for herself, she’ll make traditional dishes from her village like dédé ngoundja and nyama na kanda. These quiet family moments bring her joy.
Nadia’s story is woven from threads of resilience and hope, each stitch a testament to the beauty that she brings to life. With each new product she masters and every artisan she guides and teaches, she strengthens the mission of Ndara – telling a story of skill, joy, and empowerment from the heart of the Central African Republic. A story that is changing lives across the world.
